Langston Hughes once asked, “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun”? I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I don’t eat raisins on occasion, but quite frankly, I prefer grapes. A year ago, I realized that I just couldn’t let my dreams turn into a bunch of raisins.
At the time, I was running the Arts Department at Golda Och Academy. Although I loved that job, I couldn’t teach my students to become great actors, musicians, or artists without having ever achieved that myself. On my last day of work, my students gave me a bag full of letters. This way, if I ever got nervous about following my dreams, I could just open up the bag and find my courage. Needless to say, it was the greatest gift I have ever received.
Now that it has been a full year, I can finally say that I am so glad to have taken that leap. Although it was quite humbling to go from running a department to nine hour waitressing shifts, it was worth every moment.
As this journey continues, I hope that you’ll join me in my blogging adventures. On “Funky Fridays,” I will be sharing my experiences and introducing you to many of the cool people I meet along the way. Whether we’re going backstage, checking out new music, or meeting artists or creative people together, I hope you’ll join me on this exciting journey.
I would now like to take this opportunity to apologize to my best friend Jessie. She really loves raisins, but from now on, it’s all about the grapes.
Have a Funky Friday!
